Before John and I had a million children, we had a million cats and dogs. We used to regularly take our dogs for long walks at a local nature trail. After switching states and starting our family, we stopped prioritizing walking in the woods. Between the kids and the animals, it just felt like a lot of work.
Quarantine, despite all it’s flaws, has resurrected my love of the outdoors. I forgot how good it feels to get outside and explore. Walking in the woods clears my head and almost always lightens my mood. And best of all, it’s free entertainment for the entire family!
I found the BEST walking trail, just 10 minutes from our house. The paved paths are perfect for walking with a stroller. I have been dragging all 5 kids with me to the trail everyday. It feels great to have something to look forward to, instead of endless hours of schoolwork and television. Plus, we are all getting a little extra exercise, which is definitely needed after all these months of quarantine.
John and I have been exploring the area on the weekends, finding even more places to walk. After nearly 15 years of living here, we’re finally getting familiar with all the trails our area has to offer. We have been pleasantly surprised by all the different parks we have found within minutes of our house.
Although 2020 hasn’t been a great year, I am thankful for the small things it has offered. The return to simplicity. Finding joy in nature. Rediscovering my love of the outdoors.
I would love to hear how you have been spending your free time during these unprecedented times. Hopefully you’ve been able to find something that brings you joy and calms your worries, while also keeping you and your family safe.
