John and I are being frugal and saving where we can on our kitchen remodel, but we’ve already spent a nice chunk of change on the project. It’s actually painful watching the amount in our savings account dwindle. I know we will be happy with the end result, but getting to that point is harder than I anticipated.
I definitely think paying cash for everything has made us more aware of where our money is going. There have been a few times over the last week when we were on the verge of heading down an expensive road. Fortunately, our financial situation helped put us back on the right path.
As you’ll remember, we were trying to select a new floor for our kitchen remodel. The first person who came out to measure the space told us we would need to put down a new plywood subfloor. This meant going over our existing floor (not even an option because of the height difference in our floors) or ripping out the multiple layers of existing flooring. I knew the second option would come with a much higher price tag (and more risk because of the asbestos). Although it was tempting to just rip up the floor (because honestly, it really does need to been done), we were able to stay the course with our budget friendly kitchen remodel. We ended up shopping around and found another installer who did not require a new plywood subfloor.
And in case you’re curious, we did make a final decision about our flooring. We ended up going with Mannington’s Revive luxury sheet vinyl. The pattern we chose was called Deco in Wrought Iron. I LOVE the design, and can’t wait to have it installed. Here are a few pictures of the flooring sample in our kitchen.
Overall, I feel good about the decisions we have made so far. We’ve splurged on a few items, but overall I think we’ve been reasonable with our purchases. Keeping tabs on our savings account has definitely helped keep John and I grounded and level headed. It’s so easy to go off the rails! But I plan to keep the costs low, while still improving the aesthetics and function of the our kitchen.
