This Saturday is Kids Day! What? You’ve never heard of Kids Day? Well, most people haven’t. That’s probably because we made it up.
About six years ago, on either Mothers Day or Fathers Day, our oldest asked Christy and I “If there’s a Mothers Day and a Fathers Day, why isn’t there a Kids Day?” We thought about it and said, maybe there should be.
From that day forward, we’ve declared the 2nd Saturday of July – Kids Day. It’s a day where we get the kids a little gift and take them out to do something fun. The gift isn’t big. Usually just a book. There was this guy that used to work at my company and when I told him about it he said “Every day is Kids Day.” I thought that was pretty cynical.
It was probably true for his kid though. She was an only child and they spoiled her. One example is she had three birthday parties every year. THREE! One with his family, one with his wife’s family (no, they were not divorced) and one with friends. If I was a kid I don’t think I’d want three birthday parties a year. You could have one and get the same amount of presents.
I don’t think it’s a bad thing to take one day a year and show your appreciation for your kids. Just like Mothers and Fathers, everyone gets caught up in life and it’s good to make one day special, besides their birthday.
One year we bought the kids season passes to The Funplex by our house. One year we took them to Great Wolf Lodge. Another year we took them on a 2 day trip to Hershey to go to Chocolate World and Hershey Park. I know that might seem like a lot, but I’ll tell you a secret about big Kids Day outings. You do something you were going to do anyway, but you do it on the 2nd Saturday in July and tell them it’s for Kids Day.
This year, however, is a little different. Due to COVID-19, there isn’t really anywhere to take the kids, with things in this area of the east coast still being on lock down. Christy got the kids some gifts though and went a little funner than books to make up for not going anywhere.
Our oldest daughter has been really into drawing lately. So much so, that she is currently saving up to purchase an iPad and iPencil so she can go digital with it. Her aunt bought her a large colored pencil set for her birthday, so Christy bought her a leather carrying case for them so she can keep them in nice condition. Okay, that’s not really fun, but she’ll appreciate it.
Our oldest son recently got hooked on Animal Crossing. We got our daughter the new Switch game for her birthday, and after hearing her talk about how awesome it was, he started playing her old DS version. Christy bought him the digital download of Animal Crossing: New Leaf for his 3DS.
Our middle son loves playing with this magnetic shape kit we got him last year, so Christy bought him another building set so he can build even bigger, better things with it. He really gets creative with the one he already has. We can’t wait to see what he comes up with now.
Our youngest daughter thinks she’s big stuff. She’s always wanting to do what the bigger kids are doing and really gets upset when she’s not capable of it yet. She tries regardless. Her latest thing is trying to ride a skateboard. She can’t get on and ride yet, but she’s pretty good at kicking along. Since the 2 oldest boys enjoy going outside on their pogo sticks, Christy got her a pink Flybar foam pogo stick. She is going to have a blast!
And for our youngest son, she got him a Melissa & Doug Emergency Vehicle Carrier. He loves anything with wheels on it. I’m sure he’ll have a great time rolling them around, banging them on our nice furniture, and bashing his oldest brother in the face with them.
Hopefully we don’t go through this lock down stuff next year and we can start going out and enjoying a fun day with our kids again.
