We finally finished our game closet makeover! I was hoping to get rid of more stuff, but these darn children insisted that they didn’t want to part with their beloved games and puzzles. Needless to say, we still have an overcrowded game closet. But the important thing to note is that we have organized the space. Our mess has finally been tamed, and order has been restored.
Our game closet is located in our hallway, so it is very hard to get good pictures. This first photo shows the upper portion of the closet.
Dissatisfied with the dead space at the top of the closet, I wanted to make a change. Why is there so much wasted space in traditional closets? The first shelf you see in the photo was a catch-all. I used this space primarily for my scrapbook supplies, but other things managed to find their way up there – like bows & arrows, knee pads, and Rock’em Sock’em Robots. The next shelf down was supposed to hold puzzles, but it just ended up being a hot mess.
The third shelf housed our games. There was too much space between the second and third shelf, resulting in precariously stacked boxes. It was hard to find anything, and as you might have guessed, the games frequently fell over. Finally, there was the bottom of the closet. This area was the most disorganized. We had kites, skateboards, portable desks, a dollhouse, and wrapping paper all cluttering the floor.
We took everything out. Man oh man! We had a lot of stuff packed into this small space! I was able to find new homes for some of the odds and ends. We got rid of 4 or 5 games. But the vast majority of the stuff needed to go back inside. My husband got to work, customizing the closet for our family.
This is the finished product. It was so pretty, I didn’t want to put anything back inside! John even added a light. Swoon.
As you can see in the photo, we added an extra shelf at the top of the closet for storage. These boxes hold my children’s artwork. We don’t get them out very often, so I don’t mind having them stored so high. The next shelf holds crafting supplies. Finally we have the puzzle shelf.
The next picture shows the bottom portion of the closet. The next two shelves are for games and building sets. The final shelf houses the bows & arrows and kites. The very bottom of the closet is exclusively for skateboards.
I am so happy with how it turned out. It is perfect for our family ❤️.
