After our last baby was born, we decided to have our 2 older boys share a room. We live in a small house, with small rooms. It’s hard to squeeze 2 beds into any of our bedrooms. I know, because we’ve had children share rooms in the past. This time, I knew that purchasing space saving furniture would be our best option.
I will confess that the new furniture was not purchased with frugality in mind. I selected this furniture because I knew it would make the best use of our space. It was expensive. But in a way, it was a frugal purchase. We bought new furniture for $3,000 instead of buying a new house for $250,000.
Our boys’ room is approximately 10ft x 12ft. We did not have the wall space for 2 beds, 2 dressers, and 2 book shelves. The room has lower ceilings, so bunk beds were not an option. Plus, we’ve had bunk beds in the past – we’re not fans. Have you ever changed sheets on a bunk bed in the middle of the night? TORTURE. After endless searching, I found the perfect beds. We purchased 2 low loft beds, with a dresser and bookcase that fit snugly underneath the beds.
Each of our boys have a 6 drawer dresser, which is actually bigger than what they had before sharing a room.
The book case on the foot of the bed is perfect for storing all their books and odds & ends.
The room does have a small closet too. We decided to use the closet for toy/game storage. This frees the floor space of clutter and keeps the room tidy.
I think we have made great use of the room. I feel like each boy has his own space, without being on top of one another. We will be using this arrangement long term, so it was important to think through all of our purchases. Overall, I am very happy with the furniture arrangement. It really is the perfect solution for a tight space.
