This post has been a looooong time coming. I am excited to finally share our completed DIY kitchen remodel with you. It turned out even better than I imagined. We lived with our original kitchen for nearly 15 years. During that time, we became intimately familiar with all of it’s flaws. This was a blessing in disguise, because it allowed us to design a kitchen that truly works for our family.
I wanted to start by showing you a few before pictures. Our cabinets are 59 years old. Yes, you read that correctly. These pictures show the original 1962 kitchen cabinets, which we decided to save and restore during our remodel. The flooring and wall paneling were not original, and they certainly weren’t worth saving.
This is the view of our newly refinished kitchen as you enter from the dining room. As you can see, we left the original cabinets in place (we did replace the doors to give them a more modern aesthetic). To the left, we added a bank of 3 cabinets to form a peninsula. This arrangement has given us tons more storage and countertop space.
Here is better view of the right side of the kitchen. We replaced the slab doors with shaker doors. The new doors also have soft close hinges, which we’re loving. The transformation is amazing. The cabinets look brand new.
This next photo is a view of the left side of the kitchen. You can see the peninsula we added, and also the double pantries my amazing husband built. We also added that cute little coat rake along the back wall.
Here is a better view of my beloved pantries. Swoon. I love them. They have added so much storage to our kitchen. They are, hands down, my favorite part of the remodel.
Here is a view from the other side of the kitchen, looking back toward the sink/stove area. In this picture you can see the walnut stained shiplap on the peninsula and the new seating area. Our 3 younger children LOVE sitting at the peninsula. It’s nice to be able to interact with them while we’re cooking. Also, please note my ADORABLE wall decor. I love the spoon and fork (and my shiplap walls)!
I know we have talked a great deal about our kitchen remodel, and I am sure many of you would like to know the cost of some of these projects. Next week, I will detail the cost of specific features in our new kitchen, like the granite, the tile backsplash, the flooring, and the replacement cabinet doors. I am excited to share more about the financial side of this project with you!
